Google unveils social network to challenge Facebook

Google Tuesday unveiled its new social networking service to take on Facebook.

The Internet search engine introduced Google+ social network for what it called 'real-life sharing.' To be available first by invitation only, Google said its social network will meet the most basic human needs to connect with others.

Aiming to take advantage of flaws in networking on Facebook, Google said, "Today, the connections between people increasingly happen online. Yet the subtlety and substance of real-world interactions are lost in the rigidness of our online tools. In this basic, human way, online sharing is awkward. Even broken. And we aim to fix it.''

Google said, "We'd like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software. We want to make Google better by including you, your relationships, and your interests. And so begins the Google+ project.''

It would offer options of networking, including 'Circles' interface for adding friends and sharing 'what matters, with the people who matter most' and'Hangouts' interface for group video chat.

"The debut of Google+ will test whether Google can overcome its past flops in social networking, like Buzz and Orkut, and deal with one of the most pressing challenges facing the company,'' said The New York Times.
"At stake is Google's status as the most popular entry point to the Web. When people post on Facebook, which is mostly off-limits to search engines, Google loses valuable information that could benefit its Web search, advertising and other products.''

But Google+ might be already too late, the paper said.

"In May, 180 million people visited Google sites, including YouTube, versus 157.2 million on Facebook, according to comScore. But Facebook users looked at 103 billion pages and spent an average of 375 minutes on the site, while Google users viewed 46.3 billion pages and spent 231 minutes.

"Advertisers pay close attention to those numbers, and to the fact that people increasingly turn to Facebook and other social sites like Twitter to ask questions they used to ask Google, like a recommendation for a restaurant or doctor, because they want more personalized answers,'' The New York Times said.

Windows 8 could be ready by April 2012

A new rumour from ZDNet suggests Microsoft could have its Windows 8 software ready for manufacturers by April 2012.

The software, which has already been previewed by Microsoft and is designed to look similar to the Windows Phone software, has not been given a comprehensive review by the public yet.

ZDNet has also reported that Microsoft could be ready to release a beta version of Windows 8 by September, with a source saying that it will be the first and only beta build of the software.

Windows 8 is set to be a departure from Windows 7 in terms of preliminary design. An early preview of the software shows the welcome screen of the new operating system will be made up of a number of coloured tiles, similar to the way the Windows Phone software is organised.

Apple makes jailbreaking that little bit harder, developers claim

Software and hardware giant Apple is trying to stop users from jailbreaking in their latest iOS 5 release, a group of developers has claimed.

According to the iPhone Dev Team, which regularly releases software packages that allows users to “jailbreak” their devices, the new version of the software will make it harder for users to go back to earlier versions of the software.

This can happen when users try out new software, and then go back to a jailbroken version of earlier software.

“Although it’s always been just a matter of time before Apple started doing this (they’ve always done this with the BBTicket), it’s still a significant move on Apple’s part,” the team says on its blog.

“They’ve stepped up their game.”

With Pottermore, J.K. Rowling Gives Harry Potter The (Very Lucrative) Elixir of Life

Around 4 AM PDT this morning, Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling unveiled the latest addition to the massively successful series: a website called Pottermore, which will feature, among other things, Harry Potter eBooks (which have never been legally available to date) and thousands of words of new content describing the characters and world of Harry Potter.

But while the site now features a handful of screenshots, Rowling and the accompanying press material were still pretty vague about what exactly Pottermore is. Fortunately, as a long-time fan myself, I have a few guesses. So let’s try to cast some light on what this all means. Imperi- err, Lumos!

First, the biggest immediate news: this will mark the first time Harry Potter novels will be available in eBook formats. Rowling has indicated that the books will be DRM-free and will be available for all eBook devices including the Kindle and iPad, though it’s a little unclear how exactly this is going to work. Obviously this is a big deal (the books have sold more than 400 million print copies worldwide). I doubt people are going to rebuy the books the way some of them have with Apple’s launch of The Beatles on iTunes, but going forward the electronic editions will undoubtedly prove immensely popular.

But today’s announcement was about more than eBooks. It’s about the future of the Harry Potter brand, which just got a new home.

It’s a little weird to think about, but up until now there’s never been any officially sanctioned home base for Harry Potter fans.

Fan sites like Mugglenet and The Leaky Cauldron have given aficionados a place to get daily news updates and interact on forums. But HarryPotter.com just redirects to a Warner Brothers site about the upcoming Deathly Hallows Part II film. That comes out in less than a month so it’s going to be stale soon, and even if Warner transforms it into a central hub about all of the films, it’s still going to leave fans wanting — especially since many  of them care more about the books than the films.

Which brings us to Pottermore. As soon as the midnight showing of Deathly Hallows ends, millions of fans are going to walk out of the theatre with the uneasy feeling that they don’t have anything Harry Potter-related to look forward to — ending a streak that’s gone on for a decade now.

Pottermore is the answer to this.

Here’s how the site is being described in the press release:

For this groundbreaking collaborative project, J.K. Rowling has written extensive new material about the characters, places and objects in the much-loved stories, which will inform, inspire and entertain readers as they journey through the storylines of the books. Pottermore will later incorporate an online shop where people can purchase exclusively the long-awaited Harry Potter eBooks, in partnership with J.K. Rowling’s publishers worldwide, and is ultimately intended to become an online reading experience, extending the relevance of Harry Potter to new generations of readers, while still appealing to existing fans. As the Pottermore Shop develops, it is intended that it should include further products designed specifically for Harry Potter fans, offering a potential outlet for Sony products and services related to Pottermore.

(Yes, that bit about keeping the series relevant to new readers is a little depressing — since when do fantastic books require an online supplement? But I digress…)

Looking at the screenshots, I’m reminded of J.K. Rowling’s official site, which she launched while the books were still being written. Through the site Rowling sporadically revealed clues about the upcoming books using basic puzzles (in 2004, for example, she unveiled the title of Book Six). The site is also littered with tidbits of trivia about the characters, as well as FAQs and debunked rumors.

Pottermore sounds like it will share some of the same characteristics. Like Rowling’s official site, Pottermore appears to mix a combination of hand-drawn illustrations and occasional animation, as opposed to a flashy interface. And, like Rowling’s official site, there will be a wealth of new content for fans to discover.

The site is launching to private beta testers on July 31 (which coincides with Potter’s birthday in the books), and will be broadly available in October. Over the ensuing months and years, Rowling will be gradually adding more content to the site, fleshing out back stories and adding additional interactive features.

Some of this will be contributed by users — the press release notes that users can submit “comments, drawings and other content in a safe and family environment.” And the screenshots also depict some social features, like seeing where in each book each of your friends is. Also note the inbox, which is an owl with a number badge pinned to it.

And.. err.. none of that sounds that thrilling to me. Granted, I’m hardly the target demographic, but even the 12-year old version of me (which is when I started reading the books) probably would have shrugged his shoulders at this. New content? Great — definitely enough to keep me coming back once a month or so to look for new tidbits. Being able to follow along with my friends? Bleh.

But I’m guessing the real meat of the site will come through the partnership with Sony. Sony is describing this as “a pioneering partnership that will help shape the future of story-telling” and will span years. No, a Harry Potter MMO was not announced today, but the demand is there, and Sony certainly has experience with massively multiplayer games — it created Everquest (which was the most popular predecessor to World of Warcraft). Update: Wired UK points out that Warner Brothers owns the rights to Harry Potter video games. And while the press release says that Warner will be a collaborator as the project moves forward, it doesn’t indicate just how deeply involved they’ll be. In other words, that MMO may be less of a given — there may be deals that need to get worked out, or perhaps Warner would do a game independent of Pottermore.

There will undoubtedly be other products as well. Some will bomb, just as some Star Wars products have bombed. But there’s still going to be a huge demand for new Harry Potter games and media, and they now have a launchpad that fans will be checking in on regularly for years to come. And some of those products will rake in boatloads of money.

Or maybe it really is just a Harry Potter-themed pseudo social network. In which case, pass the firewhiskey.

The Bold 9900 is driven by a 1.2 GHz Snapdragon processor and has 768MB of RAM, which is more power than is usually seen on Blackberry devices. The on-board memory comes in at a solid 8GB, which is a good amount for storing data, photos and documents.

The user-interface should also prove fantastic because the Bold 9900 has a 2.8 inch touch-screen, as well as a full QWERTY keyboard. When combined with the new Blackberry 7 operating system the Bold 9900 should be a joy to use.

One of the most advanced aspects of the Bold 9900 is that it supports NFC, which enables you to pay for items contactlessy using your mobile. A 5 mega-pixel camera is also present which can shoot great photos and videos.

The price of the Bold 9900 on Three has yet to be unveiled but we'd anticipate it to be available free on the One Plan for around £35 a month.

OS X Lion Full-Screen App Mode Doesn’t Play Well With External Displays

If you use multiple monitors on a regular basis, you might care about how Mac OS X Lion handles Full-Screen Apps when hooked to an external display. In short, it doesn’t work that well.

To be clear, multiple monitors work fine in Lion, everything is the same as past versions of Mac OS X, you can mirror or extend your display as usual, that’s all dandy. The problem arrises when you put an app into Full-Screen mode; this causes only the default display to go into full-screen view, and the external screen becomes just a large and unusable linen wallpaper filled placeholder.




Full-Screen Apps Built with MacBooks in Mind?
Looking at Apple’s web page for the Full Screen App feature, you’ll notice there are no desktop Macs shown, it’s all about the MacBook Air, so it’s entirely possible this feature was developed mostly with laptop users in mind because it benefits them the most.

Considering the use-case scenarios, you probably have plenty of screen real estate available if you use an iMac 27″ or if your MacBook Air is hooked up to a large 24″ external LCD. The pixel-saving feature of Full Screen apps is just less useful on a large display than on a smaller screen. Maybe Full-Screen apps were intended for smaller screens to begin with? The feature shines on the MacBook Air 11.6″ and other portable Macs, how useful is full-screen Safari at 2560 x 1440 anyway? As a commenter on MacRumors Forums says, “full screen apps address an issue specific to small screen devices and for larger screens that issue doesn’t need addressing”.

It’s Called “Developer Preview” for a Reason
Finally, remember that Lion is still a “Developer Preview”, meaning things we see now may not be finished and may ship differently in the final release next month. The way that Lion is currently handling full screen apps and external displays (as of DP4 build 11a494a) could be indicative of an unfinished feature. Maybe it’s even a bug? Maybe it will change come time to ship?

Or maybe not? If this is how Lion works with full-screen apps, it’s not that big of a deal, you can always just avoid the feature when your Mac is hooked up to an external display.

I heard that Target is discounting packs of them right now, but this probably varies by store and their website doesn’t indicate any such sale.

So grab a couple iTunes gift cards on sale, add the balance to your Apple ID now, and wait for Lion to come out. If you’re not thrilled with the App Store distribution model, don’t forget you can burn a Lion installation DVD yourself too.

HP to join crowded tablet market with its own TouchPad

I guess it's better to be late than never knock on the door. HP announced Thursday that it will be coming out with its own TouchPad tablet July 1, just in time for fireworks.

We knew a tablet was in the works from the world's largest computer maker best known for its printers and computers.

Cellular South, however, is ready to go with its first Windows Phone 7. The HTC 7 Pro, decked out in dark gray, silver and black, arrives Monday.

It is joining a batch of other tablets, including the iPad2, Motorola Xoom, more Galaxy Tabs and the BlackBerry Playbook.

Since there's still a few days before HP will be taking orders, let's take a look under the hood.

Platform

HP started dabbling in smartphones with the IPAQ Voice Messenger in 2007 before getting serious and buying Palm in 2010. Palm had built a following around the early Palm Pilot organizer and the Treo line of smartphones.

This deal gave HP control of Palm's slick operating system known as webOS, which was being used on the Palm Pre smartphones.

The webOS platform is completely different from Android and the iOS devices.

If you ask any Palm Pre fans, they would say it's all about synergy, as the webOS goes about gathering all your information, such as contacts, calendar items and social networks, and putting it in one place.

Armed with Palm's technology, I knew it would just be a matter of time before an HP tablet was born and shazam!, we now have the TouchPad.

HP simply says "there is nothing like it" when touting the webOS platform, adding that it'll take multitasking to another level.

If the TouchPad can put all my calendars in one place, like HP claims, that could be a winner, as I have calendars scattered all the over the Web in Google, Yahoo!, Apple's MobileMe and of course, Microsoft Exchange. That's just too many, but I don't know what to do about it.

According to HP, you can expect a lot of synergy between the TouchPad and two HP smartphones - the Veer and the Pre 3 - for sharing Web addresses with the TouchPad.

The TouchPad will have the same 9.7-inch display size as the iPad but will weigh just a tad more at 1.6 pounds.

It'll have a 1.3 megapixel front-facing camera, which falls short of the Xoom's and Galaxy Tab's 2 MP cameras and way short of the PlayBook's 3 MP camera.

As for competing in the price arena, the TouchPad comes in at around $500 for the 16 gigabyte model and around $600 for the 32 GB model.

The TouchPad will be available at most electronic retailers soon.

If you can't wait, you can preorder starting June 19 at HP's online store.

HTC 7 Pro
I have been itching to get my hands on a Windows Phone 7 device and the HTC 7 Pro smartphone has arrived all charged up and ready.

The early report is that it's different from Android devices and the iPhone. Very different.

That's because it's sporting Microsoft's new Windows Phone 7 operating system that gives you Hubs and Titles on the homescreen instead of icons to gather all your related digital content into a single touch.

It has a touchscreen keypad as well as a sliding QWERTY keyboard that tilts. And the familiar windows Start menu is still around to launch the Hubs and Titles.

For Windows Mobile fans, this might be the one you've been waiting for.

It'll be available from Cellular South for $199.99 under contract once you receive a $50 mail-in reward card.

First-time users of BlackBerry News – specifically those using the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet – will notice curated news feeds in specific categories, where we’ve chosen multiple content providers to populate content. The curated feeds come in the following categories: Arts & Entertainment, Business, Health & Lifestyle, News Headlines, Science & the Environment, Technology, and Travel. These news feeds are exclusively available for the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet version of the BlackBerry News app, and can be found in the “News Categories” section of the app if you’re looking for a way to subscribe to those feeds.

Clicking on a subscription then gets you to an abbreviated summary view of articles within that news feed, so you can quickly scan headlines, view images and a short description of the article to determine if you want to read more of the article. You can swipe to the left to get the next page of articles, and repeat the gesture to get to the last available article.

Once you find an article you want to read, just touch on the article and you’ll be presented with a full article view.

If you’re going to be in a place where network access is unavailable, the BlackBerry News application also provides offline access to your previously downloaded feed content, so you can still read downloaded articles while you’re out of range from a Wi-Fi® signal. Acquiring new content requires connection to a Wi-Fi signal.

Adding new news feeds

You can add your own subscriptions to RSS feeds by hitting the “News Library” button. Once in the News Library, you can either search for a specific feed that you’re looking to add, or you can browse through the content library to find some of the more popular and well-known feeds. As search is currently limited to feeds indexed in the content library of the application, it’s possible you may not be able to find the RSS feed you’re looking for. In those cases, you can input the URL of the site that has the news feed that you want to add, and the app will detect if the news feeds are available for you to subscribe to.

Your subscriptions will be synced up with your BlackBerry ID, so if you’re on the go without your BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, you can always catch up on the news through your BlackBerry smartphone by using our BlackBerry News Feeds application available in BlackBerry App World.

Unsubscribing to news feeds and updating content

From the “My News” home screen in the BlackBerry News application, you can use the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet bezel drop-down gesture to pull up an options menu, where you’ll be able to update your content or edit and delete any subscriptions you don’t want anymore.
